Why I’m Not Investing In A “Proper” Blogging Camera Anytime Soon

I’ve now officially been blogging for a year and a half, and guess what? I still shoot blog photography with my regular ol’ iPhone 7. I’ve done quite a few posts on how to really utilize the iPhone for those blogging on the go, or those under a budget, which you can check out here. However, after almost two years of telling myself: “Hol, get your act together and buy a decent ass camera” – I’m still really reluctant to invest, and here’s why.

First of all, my reasoning is so wrong, and I know it. In all honesty, I don’t just want a camera to make my photos look bomb… I want my photos to look effortlessly beautiful just like all the other iconic style bloggers out there. Unfortunately I don’t have that Gucci belt, but getting a step closer to that almost dream-like aesthetic could become a reality with the help of the perfect lens.

Now don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with having that goal. But it just seems sort of empty for me. I’d be spending over £500 on camera equipment, primarily so my Instagram posts look more “influencer” when really it’s me that’s been influenced. My dream camera? Need you ask? It’s obviously the Olympus PEN E-PL7, the “bloggers” camera of choice. 1) It’s beautiful (obvz get it in white or are you even a blogger tho?) and 2) It works wonders for your photography … apparently.

From what I’ve heard, it’s not even about the camera – it’s all about the lens. If you didn’t know, people shell out the big bucks for a perfect lens and I can totally see why it’s worth the splurge. But as a broke ass student graduate, it’s just really not something that I can justify purchasing when I’m now going to have priorities such as saving to travel or beginning the slow ascension of the property ladder.

I currently blog with my iPhone 7, and before you say it – yes, I totally missed out and should have got the 7 Plus. However, my contract ended at like the worst time possible and I was desperate to upgrade within my student budget. The 7 Plus will probably be my new upgrade goal (isn’t it everyone’s rn) as the camera quality is actually shockingly good. Downside? It’s fucking huge and I have diddy lil hands so I do see myself having a few dropsy accidents with the thing.

Finally, the main reason why I’m really not in a rush to purchase a “real” camera – I don’t need one. Please don’t get me wrong as I’m not bragging at all, but I get many complements on my blog photography from bloggers and PR’s all the time, and you can too! Utilising your phone camera is the best thing you can learn to do, as spending a few hours of learning, days of practicing, and months of getting it to work for you can save you so much £££ in the meantime. If you can totally justify splashing out on a camera, then you do you. But I’ll be sticking to my iPhone 7 for the time being hunnies.

What do you shoot your blog photography with?

Are you the time to use your phone or splash out on an SLR?

I've had a DSLR since I took art A Level so it wasn't something I bought specifically for my blog, however since then I have bought the f 1.8 55mm lens as its perfect for portraiture and since I shoot a fair amount of fashion photography it definitely helps! However saying that I use my iPhone 7 a lot for the 'gram and don't really see a huge difference between shots! Xxwww.lilyolivia.co.uk

That's exactly what I think would happen if I bought an SLR right now! xxx

Stick to your guns bb, your style is the most important (which is ALWAYS fab) not what you take it with 😉 Though, in all honesty, the pen is probably one of the most overrated cameras out there… sure it looks pretty but for the price you might as well just get a canon or a nikon where the lens game is much stronger (and you have way more versatility with settings and frame size). There are also some fab slr cameras on the market with interchangeable lenses that are a fraction of the pen price! <3 Plus there's so much post-production done to the actual images after, it's really not the pen doing all that work, and I think you're iphone shots are as good (if not better) *sends all the hearts I LOVE YOUR OUTFIT HERE DARLIN'*Fii xo | little miss fii | fashion, lifestyle, south korea

I have an SLR camera but I studied photography in college and then on my fashion course at uni when we create campaigns and such it helps to have a decent camera but your photos are unbelievably good for an iPhone, I definitely need to learn to utilise mine on the go more!Toni xwww.clarkecouture.co.uk

This is a great post! To be honest I'm so sick and tired of the pressure in the blogging community to get a fancy camera. I can't afford to buy a camera for my blog, so I use my phone camera. My phone isn't an iPhone. It's an Android phone but it's not top of range. Yet it works well as a camera when taking blogging pictures, and I add filters on as well. I might even write a blog photography post for those who use their mobile phones.:) Chichichichiwrites.com
