Recently I got the privilege of trying out Sleek‘s new lipstick range, Lip VIP (£5.50/each), ahead of the official launch – exciting stuff, huh? I recieved two seriously bright shades, which were honestly completely out of my comfort zone. But hey, I love a challenge and sometimes experimenting really does work out for the best, so I decided to test them out with an open mind.
The first lippy I recieved was Flaunt It* – a bright coral-orange tone in a semi matte texture. This was actually the colour I was drawn to first, as I find that coral lipsticks really do pop if you have silver/grey hair. Upon opening the lipstick, I found that it is very close to being a true orange, and has only got a touch of redness to it. However, if you have very pigmented lips like me, it turns slightly more red toned on the lips.
The second shade I tried out was Night Spot* – a bright fuchsia pink in a semi matte texture. I wasn’t quite sure what the colour was supposed to be when I first opened this one up. The packaging says red, but after a little swatch – it’s definitely a pink. Perhaps a more red-pink, but still very pink. As a general rule, I don’t wear pink lip products – and this one is way over the line as it’s so bright.
I was very satisfied with the colour payoff of both shades, which provided even, saturated colour. Both of these lipsticks apply really smoothly, with no dragging – and I do put this down to the moisturising nature of these lipsticks. Apparently they contain Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, and Vitamin E to look after, and hydrate your lips. After wearing one of the lipsticks for a few hours, it became clear that it almost act like a lip balm, as my lips were so soft when I removed it.
Usually, I would avoid any type of “moisturising” lip products as I find that the texture is way too shiny and slippery for my taste. However, this lipstick does really provide a gorgeous velvet feel on the lips, and isn’t drying like a fully matte product. I think it’s important to note that the Night Spot lipstick is quite glossy in comparison to Flaunt it, so there might be some texture discontinuity throughout the range.
The packaging is really impressive for such a budget, drugstore brand, and Sleek are clearly upping their game. Chic matte black casing, with a clear plastic section to see the shade, gives that luxe edge and they do look really attractive on your vanity. The one problem I have is that they aren’t perfectly rectangular, and seem to get narrower on one side – but only slightly. Whyyyyy? It’s not the end of the world, but I do find it a bit annoying. On the upside, they smell amazing and I think that might be because of the Shea Butter, as they have a very subtle chocolate fragrance.
Overall I think Flaunt It will make a great edition to my quite miniscule bright lipstick collection, however I will have to put Night Spot on the side for now, the texture just isn’t semi-matte and the colour most certainly is not for me.
