So it’s that time of year again. The festive season is finally over and we all start feeling that January blues set in, am I right? The days are dark and cold, and especially in Wales – wet, very wet. Naturally, this is when we all get ridiculously excited over our new year ventures and what better way than to begin planning a journey of discovery. Whether it be to experience new cultures, see the world, or to get an amazing (and well deserved, I might add) tan.
This is also the time of year when I get a bit antsy, and with my “To See” destination numbers growing – it’s hard to pick out which ones to send to the top of the list. Here are my must see travel destinations.
In advance, I would like to apologise for the insane wanderlust that I’m about to give you.
One of my biggest goals is to backpack through Asia, including Thailand – the clear, azure water and scrumptious food (think noodles, noodles, and more noodles) are what I’m seriously craving right now. As university is currently pinning me down, it will have to wait until I graduate. A girl can dream though – oh, and plan.
The main parts of Thailand that I want to experience is firstly, that slightly predictable but none-the-less exciting, island hopping. This, in combination with cultural temple visits, elephant trekking, and experiencing all of the breathtaking scenery finally with my own eyes, sounds like the holiday of a life time.
Without a doubt, I would love to be able to spend a few nights in a bit of luxury amidst the turbidity of fleeting stays in hostels. Thailand has such a unique and culture-rich architecture that has flowed through into their modern day buildings, and many of the luxury hotels/villas in the country feature a east-west fusion throughout. If this isn’t your thing, there are plenty of more modern options – which are a lot more accessible due to Thailand’s recent boom in tourism.
I seriously can’t wait to say “Sawadika!” to Thailand in the near future.
THE GREEK ISLANDS
One destination that I have been dying to go to for years now is Greece. I think this all stems from a slight obsession with Greek Mythology, that developed when I was younger. First it was Hercules, then I had a class project on the subject, and that was it – I was hooked. Based on this my visit to Greece would be not only to experience the local cuisine, which I hear is amaaaaazing, but to visit as many historical monuments as possible. If this is to your taste, head on down to Athens. There’s the Parthenon, Acropolis, temples aplenty, and much more to explore.
If you are more into that relaxation-life, which we all crave from time to time, there are numerous idyllic destinations to choose from to help you get that much needed R&R. The Greek Islands, such as Santorini, provide tempting aesthetics such as white and stone architecture, whist boasting contrasting sapphire backgrounds – hello, instagrammers!
Right now, Greece is really affordable – and it’s an ideal location for student budget-friendly escape, plus they do need the tourism! It’s a win-win if you ask me.
So I’ve been thinking about packing my bags and heading over to Croatia for a while now. It is a massive destination for a variety of events, and has been made famous by dance music festivals such as Outlook. If raving it out to some dance anthems isn’t hitting the spot for you, don’t panic! Croatia has so much more to offer.
Croatia also has plenty of islands under it’s belt, so fun-filled Island hopping has become fairly popular. But for me, the Plitvice Lakes on the mainland are a must-see. Actual fresh air, tranquil lakes, and cascading waterfalls. But hey, you could always do both! Croatia has both an energetic, vibrant side, and hidden areas of serenity for that much needed me-time.
Still an expensive destination, but worth every penny in my books.
When I consider planning my trip to the USA in the (hopefully) near future, I can’t seem pin point one city that I want to experience. Heck, I can’t even decide on one state!
With a variation of climates, environments, and landscapes, choosing just one location simply isn’t easy work. From the bright lights of Vegas, to the classic Texan BBQ – I want to see and taste my way through the States. And whilst Universal Studios Florida is clearly a must, I do feel the need to head to LA to, momentarily, live it up like a Kardashian.
If the “movie set” US is too cliche for your liking, a cabin in the woods in Washington might suffice. Surrounded by rugged woodland, and crisp fresh air. Throw in an open air hot tub and relax, and nothing could go wrong – right?
I’m a sun and sand loving girl by nature, but something about fresh, snow covered mountain tops covers me in goosebumps. The alluring ambience of the light reflecting from gleaming white snow is a fine thing, and it never ceases to amaze me.
One thing that clearly gets raved about all the time is the ability to take part in some incredible Snowsports in the French Alps – and if you don’t know whether skiing or snowboarding is ya thing, there are plenty of opportunities to find out.
I feel like I neglect the colder climates because they seem to portray less of a relaxing atmosphere, however this is definitely not the case. If snow sports don’t take your fancy (I am like bambi on any form of frozen precipitation) – then imagine sipping on a warming chocolat chaud whilst having some much needed tête-à-tête with your other half. With this as your backdrop, it couldn’t get more magical.
