Ohhhhh I wish, I wish, I wish to be a glazed donut….
When it comes to highlighters, I really do by into all the hype. It’s the type of product that (other than foundation) I am so willing to splurge and spend big bucks on, and the type of product that I’ll impulsively buy on a whim in the drugstore. It’s my Achilles heel of the beauty world, and I’m not mad at it.
I’m personally more into that natural glow, without anything too drastic in colour or that “icy” look. I simply can’t pull off pink, white, blue, purple, whatever, highlights because my skin is waaaaaay too yellow toned to handle it. I end up looking really silly, and although it looks bomb on gals with pale/deep skin, in the mid-ground it just ends up looking a bit like an adults interpretation of face paint.
These highlighters that I’m recommending aren’t just my faves for the shade (I’m a champagne/gold gal, sorry not sorry) but for the dreamy, creamy formulas that will leave your jaw ajar. I’m covering quite a few finishes here, from in yo’ face to subtle sheen, and price ranges from the same amount you’d shell out for a coffee, to a £40 break the bank purchase.
This is the priciest of all of my highlighters & it’s the one that I really didn’t think I would fall head over heels for. Spoiler – I did. I was actually sent this by Birchbox as a little thank you for helping out with a post on their website, what a fab prezzie huh? As soon as I opened it I was like *ahhh damn it’s too dark for me* and in the pan, it really does look dark. It also swatched really crappily (is that even a word, just bear with me okay…) – So I really didn’t expect much at all on the skin.
Turns out this is a beautiful “sheen” highlight which leaves you with a very glowing from within type shine on the cheekbone. It’s not for those who like a good strobe, but this look beauuuutiful on the skin for day-today makeup looks.
Oooooh gawd this is just as beautiful as everyone makes it out to be. I didn’t really know whether to believe the hype with this highlighter, but turns out that the hype is most definitely for real. This is a proper “glazed donut” highlight, leaving you with a stunnnnnnning gold stripe of glow on your cheek bones. I probably reach for this one the most out of my whole makeup collection because it is quite small and easy to travel with, plus it looks beaut as a one-and-done shimmer on the lid, or even just to highlight the inner corners and browbone. Absolutely gawwwwgus.
If you want that “glazed donut” wet-look glow with a lot of shine – this is your bezzie mate. A lot of people rate this down as they claim it moves foundation etc, but I haven’t found this to be an issue once and I’ve used this for 4ish months now. I really don’t think this gets enough hype because the effect is beaaaaautiful. I always apply this after I powder my face, so my foundation doesn’t move around, and I have also tried applying it to a sponge and then onto the face from there for a more sheer look. My fave way to apply is over powder, from the bullet, then blend in with the head of my fingers with a “dabbing” motion. Top this with the Baked Gelato powder and you are glowin’ girl.
If you have Medium/Deep skin, can I get an amen? This highlight is purrrrrfect for you, honestly, it is. I took this on holi-bobs to Cyprus this year and as my tan developed, this started to look more and more *POP* on my skin. On my natural skintone (Light/Medium) this looks really pretty aswell, but is a little dark for that bam in yo’ face highlight. To emphasise deeper skin tones, or show off a golden tan – this one will be right up your street. Word of warning though, you really do need to scrape off the top layer like they tell you on YouTube…
If you love that foiled, strobing, highlight look, then you need this in your collection. This shadow makes for the perfect inner corner, brow bone, and cupids bow highlight with a serious shine. This is a beautiful white, with duo chrome pink shift, shimmer shadow that applies wonderfully with a fluffy tapered highlight brush. I used to pop this on my cheek bones and inner corners for a quick uni look when I was in a rush. Plus, this shadow is so travel friendly and will only set you back £5.50.
What are you fave ride-or-die highlighters?
*I was gifted some of the items in the post, however all thoughts and opinions are my own*
