2017: The Best Bits

H8 to jump on the bandwagon since every blogger & their mum are doing recap posts, whether that be on IG stories, Facebook, Twitter, or the classic blog post. I chose the latter as although 75% of  my 2017 has been taken up by university-related topics, I have so much to celebrate for the year 2k17.

ASOS Geo White Boxy Shirt

TURNING 23 Y/O

This isn’t exactly a highlight as it does subtly remind me that I’m turning 24 next month… however, it’s a highlight none-the-less. I turned 23 years old in January 2017, and I remember feeling so much more mature (I don’t know whether that’s cliche or not) compared to when I embarked on my uni adventure. I actually had an exam the day before, and the day after, my 23rd birthday so I didn’t get to celebrate at all. This year – I’m heading to Stockholm to wake up as a 24 y/o woman.

A VALENTINES’ DATE & A NEW RELATIONSHIP

Me & Alix went on our first “date” for Valentines and it was the sweetest little dinner ever. Fun fact – Alix fancied me for 3 years at uni but never had the opportunity to strike up a conversation with me. Since I was single and we were working together in a group for our masters’ degrees, why not ey? Since then our relationship has blossomed and we have our own wee home, and share every day together!

MEETING (AND LEAVING) SHITTY PEOPLE

When my relationship with my ex-partner ended, I moved into a shared house via roomshare or whatever that app’s called. At first, the girls seemed really nice and I was excited to get to know them and spend some time with them. Safe to say, none of that actually happened. They were really unpleasant towards me from week one, and made me feel like literal shit on the floor on the daily. Who knew that someone could possibly shower wrong, ey?

As soon as I realised that they were technically bullying me in the house, I deleted them all off all social media and as soon as I moved out and all the bills etc were sorted, I blocked them and deleted their numbers. Genuinely wish I didn’t have the misfortune to meet these individuals, but you live and you learn ey?

GRADUATING WITH A MASTERS

Despite my battle with depression and anxiety, the end of a long-term relationship, and the issue with a few dickhead housemates, I graduated with a masters degree in 2017…. finally. A long 5 years at uni amounted to a 2 hour ceremony, one 10 second handshake, and a lot of prosecco. Turns out, working 24/7 really did pay off in the end – I graduated with a First Class degree.

I can’t verbalise how relieved I was to finally end this 5-year-long degree as it really did exasperate all of my mental health problems, and even lead to the development of my stress-induced alopecia. Yup, I was so stressed with all of the coursework and exams that my hair actually fell out. I still sometimes get that “chill” and start to panic for one brief moment, thinking I have a deadline to meet or that I forgot to study something…. and then I realise that I’m free.

Although I have no immediate plans to use my degree (arguably £60,000 down the drain but more on that in the new year) it’s something that no-one can ever take away from me. Also, a mechanical engineering degree makes for a pretty decent fallback in life – no complaints here.

GOING “FULL TIME”

I’ve been technically “full time” since I finished uni in May, however imo, I don’t think “full time” really counts if you still have student loan left to fall back on and you’re staying with parents that don’t ask for much, or any, rent at all.

I went properly full time this November and it feels amazing to make enough to pay rent, bills, food, and have leftovers for trips etc… all through my own blog/business. I’m a full-on workaholic, so full-time-ing isn’t too much of a stretch for me – Sometimes I need to stop myself from doing work! But it’s tht sheer determination and love for what I do that’s enabled me to go full-time in the first place!

APRES-EXAMS TRIP TO CYPRUS

This was actually my first ever travel collab *pats self on the back* and I remember being well proud when I got the email asking if I’d like to do coverage in Cyprus. I’d never been to Cyprus (or any of the surrounding countries) so this was totally new to me.

I took my partner, and two of our uni friends, and we had an absolute blast. As we were still students at the time, we did all the travel “backpacker style” on a budget which made it even more of an adventure and we made some lasting memories for sure. Turns out, we all fell head over heels for Cyprus and the beaches were some of the most beautiful that any of us had seen in Europe. I know this isn’t a travel post but would 110% recommend if you love beaches and are looking for your next beachy-break.

A BLOGGING BOOM

I feel incredibly privileged to have worked on campaigns with some amazing brands this year, guys. To name a few, Nasty Gal, Pretty Little Thing, Next, L’Occitaine & M&S… but the list could go on to be honest with you, I’ve been spoilt with brand collabs this year. For me, it’s not about the “free stuff” or payment (it is a little because, you know, rent…) but it’s more about creating the actual content, and creating lasting relationships with brands.

I (FINALLY) GOT MY DREAM CAMERA

So after 2 years of blogging with my iPhone, I finally got the Olympus PEN camera – Hurrah! I’ve written so many blog posts about shooting and editing using iPhone images, and if your question is “Can you blog just using your phone?” the answer is undoubtedly – Yes. On the other hand, my photography has improved leaps and bounds since I got my camera and additional lens, and it makes editing so much easier as the original photo quality is so high. I did get Highly Commended in the Blog Photography category by just using iPhone images though, so don’t let that deter you. I’m just so, so, so happy to finally have my own camera – it was worth the wait.

ENDING THE YEAR IN EDINBURGH

Bit o’ backstory – I went full-time (properly anyway) this November and my partner got his first big engineering job at the same time. So what to do with that extra cash at the end of the year? Trip t’ Edinburgh of course! I’ve been longing to visit the Scottish capital for about three years now, but I just haven’t had the budget to go. You know what, it was totally worth waiting for!

We flew over for comfort reasons (obvz) and stayed in a wonderful airbnb not too far from the city centre (maybe a 10 min. walk). Oh, and we also got the best weather you could ask for in Edinburgh – two days of clear skies and sunshine, and one morning of thick, fluffy snowfall! We both felt really blessed and it was the purrrrfect way to end 2017.

What have been your highlights of 2017?

It really sounds like you've been put through the wringer a couple of times this year Holly, but it's incredible to read how much you have turned it around, and totally killed it. Whilst I don't comment on your blog very often, I adore your style and admire your creativity – you have made me want to be more expressive with my clothing and I'm very grateful for that. Have a wonderful 2018! xxx

Sounds like the last year wasn't all bad! Lots of good things, things to be thankful for. And even though there were some shittier moments in there, I think sometimes we need them to see the good things! Love the photos, too, by the way. x http://www.aimeeraindropwrites.co.uk x
