10 Makeup Brushes That You Need In Your Collection

This post was much overdue, let’s be honest. You probably wouldn’t know this, even if you read my blog regularly – but I am certainly a brush hoarder / enthusiast / addict … all of those titles would be accurate, as I simply love collecting and trying out new brushes. Believe it or not, but a good brushes are the heart and soul of a makeup collection and usually, the type or brush you use can either make or break your bond with a new (or old) product. So here they are, my current collection faves – I pretty much use these bad boys on the daily, and they are certainly worth the $$$.

It Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe Complexion Perfection No. 7 Brush*

The foundation side of this brush has been my go-to for weeks now and applies my everyday  Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation (Light-Medium coverage) foundation effortlessly. I haven’t actually tried it with a heavier foundation, but for a more runny foundation it works wonders. It’s just the right shape and density to buff into every contour of the face and feels super soft to the touch. However, the concealer brush just doesn’t do anything for me, personally. It’s a tiny bit frumpy and imprecise, which makes concealer application a nightmare. On a lighter note, it’s actually brill for crease shadow blending!

Spectrum Collection C04 Contour Brush*

I’ve spoken about this one in the Spectrum Collections* blog post that I did last month, but it definitely deserves another mention. It’s the most effortless contour brush that I’ve ever experienced, and I always bend my contour out seamlessly with it. Say goodbye to “muddy” looking cheek bones, because you can get such a naturally chiseled look with minimal effort with this Spectrum beauty!

It Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe French Boutique No. 4 Brush*

As blush brushes go, it’s quite easy to find a good’un. As long as the brush can apply blush precisely, blend it out, and pick up just enough product – it’s a winner. This brush is certainly one of those. It’s also tapered which makes application a dream and the clear, plastic part in the middle does make it easier to hold onto and can give you really good control of the application.

It Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe Wand Ball Powder No. 8 Brush*

A really good powder brush is critical to my makeup routine, as I use loose, translucent powder on a day to day basis. If you know, you know – and things can get messy and cakey pretty quickly with the wrong brush. This one picks up the perfect amount of product and is so easy to fluffy around the face to set any foundation down, effortlessly!

Crownbrush C531 Pro Lush Pointed Powder Brush*

I have definitely had a love/hate relationship with this powder brush, as is slightly too dense to apply translucent setting powder effectively. However, after a freak discovery – I have found it’s true purpose! It’s absolutely amazing for matte powder highlighting, guys. I have the Kat Von D Shade + Light Palette (an ultimate highlight/contourin’ babe) and this brush applies the creamy beige and banana yellow powders perfectly. FYI – I pop the yellow powder under my eyes to brighten, and the creamy beige shade on the tip of my nose, forehead, and cheekbones.

Spectrum Collections A16 Flat Precision Brush*

Uhhh, guys – This one is absolutely brill for applying shimmers, pigment, and cream shadows to the eyelid. I have used mine with glitter primer, Fix +, finishing sprays, and it works excellently with all of the above. I’ve also used to brighten the inner corners of the eye, and it’s fab for that too. Just a general gr8 all-rounder to add to anyone’s collection really.

 Crownbrush C310 Soft Fan Brush*

I’m usually into using a large crease brush to apply highlight, as it’s more precise. However, I’ve been going for this fan brush recently, as the crease brush method is just a pain to diffuse and blend (if you don’t want that strobed, bright highlight look. I’ve been using this in combo with my MAC Nutcracker Sweet highlight and it just applies the most beautiful cheekbone glow.

Morphe M330 Blending Crease Brush

This baby has been in a few of my fave products posts now, and for good reason. It’s 100% the first brush I go to grab when I begin working on my crease. It applies just the right amount of shadow in the crease and blends out effortlessly, and I’m not a very skilled blender! This one costs a measly £5ish and is totally worth grabbing to add to your collection.

 Crownbrush C321 Bullet Crease Brush*

Love love love this brush for a bloody amazing inner corner highlight. I am one of those gals who can totally go out without any fancy crease shadow. Sometimes I just want to whack some liquid liner on my lid, add mascara, and of course – a dash (a lot) of bangin’ inner corner highlight. It does make me look a bit more awake, and adds life to my brown eyes – especially if I use a pink-toned shimmer shade. This brush is purrrrfect for that application and is almost made to fit that inner corner contour.

Crownbrush C511 Pro Blending Fluff Brush*

I’ve been experimenting a bit more with colour in my crease (IKR wtf Hol?) and this brush has been a saviour for blending out any fall out, harsh lines, or generally just doin’ that blending thing that we all love. The bristles are fluffy and just a dream to whip over the lid when tidying up your shadow handiwork.
