How To Get Effortless Gel Nails At Home

Even though I get my acrylic infills done on the regs like a good gal, I've been enjoying changing up my gel colour weekly using my SensatioNail LED Lamp* and Candy Coat's gel colours*. I recieved the SensatioNail in press package about a year ago and never really knew how to use it. Like, was I really good enough at nails to try doing them myself? My instant reaction was - hell no. I'm one of those people who can never get a layer even, and I do make one hell of a mess with normal polish. So I couldn't possibly get a professional gel application at home, right? I am so happy to say that I was very, very wrong.

Candy Coat Pick n' Mix in: 071, 333*, 019*
Candy Coat got in contact and offered up a few of their gel nail products for me to try out on my acrylic extensions. Obvz, my answer was a massive yes. I've worn acrylics back-to-back for about 2 years now, and since I've been going to a very reputable salon, my nails are in perfect condition (don't worry about that!). However, it's so tough to chose a polish to work with 3 weeks worth of outfits and occasions. Do I go for that glitzy "I'm going-out" chrome, or stick to a muted nude that works with everything? Now, I don't have to settle.

After a week of fresh nails from the salon, I get that itch to change shit up. All I do is file down my nails, and remove all of the existing gel colour. If you don't have a acrylics you can soak with acetone, but don't do this with acrylics on because you'll remove your falsies.

After I have a bare nail to work with I push back my cuticles with the Unicorn Cuticle Pusher*, which is bloody beaut! After this, it's up to you how you prep your nails but since I have acrylics I don't have much prep to do. Firstly, the Strawberry Base Coat* is essential to keep your Candy Coat nails from peeling off or chipping. If you don't think you need a base coat, truuuust me. I made that mistake and witnessed it for myself - don't skip the base coat!

Apply the base coat, and cure for 60s in LED or 2 mins using a UV lamp like the one in the SensatioNail Polish To Gel Starter Kit*. Then follow the same steps but with your chosen nail colour, I'm wearing Candy Coat in 071* and it needed 3 coats (each cured with LED separately) for full opacity coverage. Then top with a Candy Coat Sugar* when the top layer is still tacky for some serious shimmer, add your Top Coat* and cure. Now sit back, and enjoy beautiful gel nails from the comfort of your own home!

How do you like your gels?

  1. Such pretty colours! I'm very much considering getting a sensatio nail kit - my nails are forever peeling and like you I tend to want to change my nail colours weekly! So this could be an option. I love the shape of your nails and those polishes look rather fab! It's my birthday soon, so I may have to treat myself to a few new bits!
