Blogging | How To Level Up Your Insta

Without a doubt, "How did you build up an Insta following?" is the most commonly asked question that I get on a daily basis. Some people fail to realise that although my blog is relatively young at only 6 months, I have been building my instagram following for over two years now. So I did have quite a large number of followers before I even created The Kitty Luxe.

This really wasn't easy, and I didn't magically gain followers overnight. It took a lot of time and effort to get my instagram to where it is now - but it was totally worth it.

So I've put together a few essential points that I found paramount to the growth of my account. These tips are mainly aimed at other bloggers, because I've had a lot of questions from fellow bloggers about how to grow their account. Enjoy!

1) DON'T EXPLICITLY POST ABOUT WHAT'S HAPPENING ON YOUR BLOG

Unlike all other social platforms, Instagram is all about aesthetics. This also means that people follow your instagram, for you! Not necessarily for your blog. I personally rarely ever post about anything that's going on my blog, and if I do - I keep it short, and sweet.

Usually it will be a flatlay or an ootd, and I'll give a little paragraph about something in the image (eg shoes, or makeup) and then I'll add something like "read more on my blog" or "up on my blog today".

I find that compared to other social media platforms, Instagram provides the least traffic to my blog. I think that it's actually the otherway round. More people are likely to follow your Instagram account because of your blog, and sadly, not the otherway round.

2) POST CONSISTENTLY GREAT CONTENT (but less is more)

Okay so the title is a tad contradictory, but stay with me...

One really important thing is to keep it consistently post great stuff. I've had questions from people who post once, maybe twice a week - and this simply isn't enough to keep people coming back to your instagram for more of your content.

However, there is definitely a flip side to this. I strictly don't post more than 2 images a day, and the majority of the time I will only post once. This is due to people being more likely to interact with your most recent post. So if you post at 11am, and then at 3pm - from 3pm onwards people are a lot less likely to interact with your 11am post.

So if you're looking to up your likes, I would say reduce your posting to once a day - and see how it goes from there.

3) FOLLOW & INTERACT

I have mentioned this in another post - Promoting on Twitter - but interaction is so important on Instagram. If you start to share the love within the insta community, and you'll reap the love coming back to you pretty soon.

Following people goes without saying, how can you expect people to want to see your content, if you're not interested in theirs. This is especially important in beginning to grow your account. Get following some like-minded 'grammers - like and comment on their content - be active!

4) UTILISE THE HASHTAG

Now now, it is not a sin to hashtag your images. I find that talking about hashtagging is a bit taboo, and sometimes it can feel like you're "trying to hard" if you hashtag a lot. But on a serious note, how are people going to see your amazing content unless your get it out there, huh?

I usually hashtag the filter and app that I used to edit that specific photo (#vscocam) and I tag any brands involved. It's always good to double check if the brand have a certain hashtag that they use to flag up images, like Missguided and #babesofmissguided.

Apparently, tags like "happy" and "love" are great for interactions, but I really don't think this is the case. There are literally millions of images with these hashtags and yours is very likely to get lost within the mix. So if you can, think outside of the box and get creative.

TIP - Put your hashtags in the comments section of your Insta post. They will still link to your post like a normal hashtag, but practically disappear from view once two people comment - yaaas!

5) PLAN YOUR POSTS

Okay guys, so I'll break this one down into steps for you. It's the most organised way I've found to plan my posts and it really does work to keep your feed looking purrrfect.

Step One - Edit Your Image

I love using Snapseed and VSCO Cam to edit my images - sometimes i'll use both, other times just the one will do! I never post raw images as I feel like they always need a little brightening, or the contrast adjusted slightly. Unlike a lot of Instagrammers, I don't have a favourite filter! I love scrolling through them all, finding out which really make the image stand out.

Step Two - Set Up Your Feed

VSCO Cam also has this neat little feature where all the images that you upload are in the 3 x 3 layout, just like instagram. So I use this feature to mimic my feed and predict how my feed will look with the next few images that I'm planning to post. A lot of the time, this action alone makes me change my mind about how I've edited the photo if it just doesn't flow with the others in my feed.

Step Three - Schedule The Post

I know that there are some great scheduling apps out there (most of the good ones your have to pay for) to help you to post your content when your followers are most active during the day. "Active" meaning liking and commenting on images on their timeline. However, I really haven't got time to keep an Instagram schedule going, as well as my blog and twitter schedules. So I now just post as soon as I get up, and this seems to work for me.

What do you do to optimise your Instagram account?

  10. Such great tips here! I have noticed that since I started posting once a day , as soon as I got up, increased the likes and views on my instagram (although I still have a very little number of followers).
I also used to post only images related to my blog and that didn't really work. It didn't change the traffic to my blog and it did not look pretty at all. Now I am much happier with my instagram page x

  13. I always try and post once a day, but if I'm posting that I have a new blog post, I usually post twice a day so I'm not JUST promoting a blog post. I've gained thirty-ish followers since February by rebranding my entire Instagram and using a "theme", which is something I never wanted to do, but I'm actually really enjoying it! I think I actually have too many photos to use haha, but they're all ready to go which makes keeping up with posting a breeze. I don't really like to go personal on my Insta! Also I hashtag like mad. It's how I get likes!
