Worth The Hype? | Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette Review

So this product review is very, very overdue - and for that, I am deeply sorry to those I teased on Snapchat many months ago now. However, this has really allowed me to get to grips with the palette and all of it's shades. I've definitely levelled-up in Too Faced Chocolate Bar experience, so I am super excited to give a pretty detailed review on a product with quite a cult following of it's own.

After about 5 trips to my local Too Faced counter, I still couldn't decide between the original Chocolate and Semi-Sweet palettes - sigh. So I did the obviously student-y thing by counting how many shades I would actually use and hey presto, the original Chocolate Bar was mine to keep. With promises of velvety soft browns and deep plums, I almost fell head over heels just looking at this palette.

I decided to pick up the palette with a Debenhams card that I got for christmas (serious high five to my boyfriend's family) and a little of my own $$$. Now this palette is definitely on the more pricey side of the high end palette spectrum - think UD Naked - and retails for £37.00 in most UK stores.

PACKAGING

Now now, high-end palette packaging is definitely more important to me than any other makeup packaging. Mainly because of the pricey nature of the product, and tbh if I'm spending money that I probably should be spending on, I don't know, food or something - it has to look the part on my vanity.

The palette casing features a brown plastic casing in the shape of a chocolate bar, with simplistic detailing on the top - yaaas for minimalism, Too Faced! It also features a stunningly framed mirror interior with all plastic inner-casing, which equals no cardboard - it's a winner guys.

I must say that this palette definitely excels in every way possible on the packaging front. God it feels luxe, like real fancy girls. The only other product that has truly made me happy in this way is the Urban Decay Naked Palette.

From the outer casing colour, to the shape, even to the font style - the details are there, and I can really appreciate that. I was pleasantly surprised that this palette doesn't come with an eyeshadow brush included, which I feel leaves more room for the shades inside the palette.

SHADES

This is the one aspect about the palette that drew me to it, it's full of the gorgeous natural browns (a great selection of both matte and shimmer shades) and a variety of purrrfect purple for when I'm feeling extra sassy. The only shade that I haven't yet touched is the pastel-pink Strawberry Bon Bon which is pretty much never going on my lids. Whilst Champagne Truffle is a tiny bit on the pink side for me to use as a corner-highlight. But 14/16 wearable shades really isn't bad for such a large palette.

My favourite combinations have got to be:

1. White Chocolate, Amaretto, Semi Sweet
2. Marzipan, Milk Chocolate, Triple Fudge

PRODUCT

The first thing anyone notices about this palette is it's delicious scent of sweet chocolate. After Too Face's success with it's cocoa Chocolate Soleil bronzers, the Chocolate Bar palette was born - and it smells just as good. Not only this, but it's made of the same good stuff: pure, antioxidant-rich cocoa powder.

I have to say that the matte shades in this palette are so soft, and they blend amazingly well. Some people think the fall out is pretty bad, but I disagree. For me, the colour pay off on the matte shadows is pretty impressive. Milk Chocolate and Semi-Sweet have been my recent go-to crease shades, whilst if you dampen your brush a bit, the shimmer shades like Amaretto really pack a punch on the lid.

The only shade that really did fail to meet my expectations is Candied Violet (I forgot to swatch this one - sorry!), which I found to be useless in both dry and wet forms as the colour intensity is so poor.

OVERALL

I really think that this palette is a must have for any makeup enthusiast!
From the novelty chocolatey smell, to the abundance of very wearable shades that are easy to blend, this palette has become a staple in my collection.

Have you tried any Too Faced products before?
What did you think?

  2. I love this palette, it's one of my favourites, and the smell..just wow! I do agree about candied violet not being a hit though. I haven't actually ever used it in a look, I just feel like it doesn't fit with the rest of the palette colour wise.

  3. I have this palette, too, and I love it! The shades are pretty long lasting and I prefer this over my Naked2. The versatility of this really fits all kinds of needs as well.

  8. I have this palette and adore it! My favourite shades are Salted Caramel and Marzipan! I do find there are two or three shades (in the shimmer ones) that lack pigment.

  15. Ah those last three searches look so creamy and pigmented! I've been really wanting to try this but my too faced counter is so sparse every time I go. I love good strict packaging too, hate paying a fortune and getting cardboard packages! Fab review xx
