From India, With Love

So about a week ago I was suffering from terrible holiday blues - whilst my boyfriend was exploring India with the band, I was sitting in my room trying to code a program to make a robot to play tetris. Needless to say, I was pretty bummed out. Unfortunately, the boyf didn't manage to bring back authentic Indian food, the sun, or a swimming pool. However, he did bring back some real gems from his travels.

After quizzing him about pretty much every aspect of this adventure, he let me raid his suitcase to see the cool things he brought back. Firstly, the money is so colourful - they take the Indian Rupee and I'm pretty sure it's currently about £1.00 GBP to 100 Rupees right now. So as this may look like a lot of $$$, it's actually amounts to less than a fiver. The decorative images on the notes are gorgeous and they definitely give you a sense of the Indian history/culture.

The one thing that I was insanely jealous about, was that my boyfriend visited the Taj Mahal in Agra - which is one of the seven wonders of the world. He said that even though he'd seen it plenty of times in images, and on TV, it didn't really prepare him for seeing it in person. As a little surprise, he brought me back a hand carved elephant, carved out of the same type of stone that the Taj Mahal was created from. I didn't even realise that each colourful stone on the the little elephant was individually crafted and inserted into the design by hand. I can't even imagine the length of time this takes, let alone the time taken to complete intricate design of the entire building.

Emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal to house the tomb of his favourite wife. There's also a legend that says the empower had plans to create a second Taj for his own tomb, built with with black marble. According to the myth, this "Black Taj" was going to be built on the opposite river bank, as a symmetrically identical building to be joined to the original with a bridge. It's only a myth, but it is quite a story, right?

I also got a cute stone tealight burner, since I'm loving wax melts at the moment, and a gorgeous handmade pashmina-style scarf which I'm going to hang up in the new year. Even though I didn't go myself, I now have little pieces of India scattered around the apartment!

Is India somewhere that you want to explore in the future?

  1. I would be jealous too, it's somewhere I've always wanted to experience. Especially the Taj, bet it's so much more amazing in person. x
