Common Misconceptions About Silver/Grey Hair

The most frequent question I get asked is how I got my hair to the colour that it is! Whether it’s initially about what products I use or how long it lasts for, it always comes down to discussing the state of my hair before I attempted to dye it silver/grey.

It made sense for me to do this in a way that I can answer the most common questions that I've been asked about my hair, as it has lead me to believe that there are some seriously common misconceptions about this attaining hair colour.
You just have to be “blonde” to achieve this colour
This is wrong on so many levels. I myself have tried to go blonde whilst my hair was too brassy, and it just went green (seriously). Your hair needs to be a very pale blonde, ashy or platinum/white.
You just have to have naturally light hair

I actually went to a hairdressers
(prior to doing it myself) and asked them to have at my hair with some bleach and turn me into an silvery ice princess. They told me that “I could never get my hair to silver as it is too dark, with too much natural orange undertone” … and they missed out on something like £100, oh well too bad.
You just have to dye your hair once and it’s silver

Silver hair is well known as being the colour that needs to most upkeep. Although, many people think that they can get their hair to silver at a hairdressers, and it’ll stay that way for a long time. I re-dye my hair once every 1.5/2 weeks. It doesn’t take long, maybe 15 minutes but making the dye does get a bit annoying when I’m in a rush.
"Having silver hair must be really damaging”

It’s the bleach that damages the hair! The silver dye that I use is a vegetable based dye, mixed with (any standard £1 store) white conditioner. Its basically a hair mask that deposits colour, that’s all.
There is only one type of silver coloured hair

This is especially not true when you mix your own dyes, as I can adjust the darkness (black dye) / coolness (dark blue dye) / tone (violet dye) as I please.

  2. My Hairdresser has essentially said to me the exact same thing yours said to you. She told me my hair would never get that light without a serious amount of damage! So irritating! I'm not brave enough to do it alone though!

  3. How did you dye you hair silver? Did you had to bleach it and then apply a silver dye? I'm really keen in going silver but I've only done blonde ombre. What can you recommend?
